<video:title>Nichrome & Fuses melting at 1800X magnification! Slow motion microscope Joyalens JL246MS review</video:title>
<video:description>Watch 1200w of solar panels burn and and melt Nichrome wire and 12v automotive car fuses under 1800x magnification! This is an unusual and interesting topic. What does Nichrome wire really look like? With a digital microscope one can see it with their own eyes. This video is a demonstration, test and review of the Joyalens JM246MS digital microscope. It was provided to me by the manufacturer for the video but I do not receive any commission for sales. I simply put the microscope into action as it came and gave my opinions along the way. When Nichrome gets hot, it creates a chromium oxide layer (oxidation) on the outside which protects it from burning out. But of course if the nichrome wire gets too hot, it will turn molten. You can see this layer forming under a microscope. 12v car fuses are not intended for use with 20-30v solar panels, but what happens when I short them through the fuse? Under the microscope, we can see this happen in great detail. Not being a seasoned microscope user, I found the Joyalens JM246MS to be straightforward to assemble and operate. It has a lot of features and comes with a generous assortment of accessories. It has HDMI digital video out and can record in 2K / 4K resolution, as well as 1080p 60fps and 720p 120fps. A digital microscope is useful in a workshop and for teaching and education. Its price is not out of reach for the average DIY enthusiast and being able to record high quality video can be very useful for video production and research purposes. If you are interested in the microscope, the link is below. Please note I dont receive any commission for sales, but the manufacturer did provide the microscope for this video and test. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Joyalens provided store link: Model JL246MS 1800x optical digital microscope https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BQ6K1JMC ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out our blog - Sola</video:description>

<video:title>Building a Ryobi 18V Solar Super Charger x3 DIY battery SuperCharger - simple, flexible & portab</video:title>
<video:description>Build your own DIY Solar Powered Ryobi SuperCharger! In this video I show how to put together a simple and effective DIY solar charging solution for Ryobi 18V power tool batteries. It uses direct DC solar electric power to do the work. This is a great setup for off electrical grid field work and remote job sites. I designed this charger to be relatively simple, using common off the shelf parts and it is straightforward to operate. This DIY supercharger is very much plug and play. Hook up the solar panels, plug in 3 batteries, away it goes. As long as there is plenty of sun, batteries will charge all day for free. Cordless tools with Lithium Ion batteries have changed the face of DIY over the past few years. There is nothing more portable and convenient than cordless power tools. But usually the chargers are lacking in this department, tethered to an AC grid connection. This means dragging a top heavy and complex AC power solution along to charge tools on the go. I am a fan of operating appliances directly from PV solar panels - with little to nothing in between. This DIY 18v supercharger can directly accept a DC input from solar panels or even a 12v car battery if required. This gives flexibility and options. No inverter is required - charge controller and battery bank also can become optional. The DC converters used are CC CV buck boost converters. They allow operation from a wide variety of DC power sources. Plus they are relatively cheap and simple, and actually could be repaired with basic electronics knowledge. This setup can eliminate complex inverters, charge controllers and heavy batteries, reducing cost and increasing efficiency. From a preparedness standpoint, it makes a lot of sense. When the grid goes down, you can keep charging and keep working! In this video I will show the build steps required to build this charger and also spend a lot of time explaining how to use DC DC converters in an application like this with solar power. Hope you enjoy the video! ///PARTS LIST - Work in Progress (Scroll down </video:description>

<video:title>Mini Solar Electric Oven 12v 18v direct PV DC solar power prototype toaster test solar solarenergy</video:title>
<video:description>NOTE: the 12v Oven DIY / how to build video is coming next. I believe direct PV (PV-to-Load, PV2L) solar electric cooking appliances are in the future, and have developed several working prototypes in my solar workshop. Check out this early demonstration (April 2023) of one of my ovens running live in a field test cooking shrimp. The oven is small, lightweight and very efficient, needing less than the power of 2 100 watt solar panels to do the job. (Future versions may only require 1x 100w panel) This solar powered oven design is fantastic for Grid Down (thats the real off grid) plus camping, RV, emergency preparedness, remote rural sites and more. There is nothing cleaner and more green than cooking hot meals straight off of small solar panels. No large battery banks, light weight, robust design and construction, high efficiency are key design goals for these prototypes. Solar electric PV-to-Load ovens can do what Solar Thermal ovens cannot: bring the oven indoors out of the wind, sun and environmental factors. All thats needed is a pair of wires. <video:title>12 Volt Cooktop PROTOTYPE - First Test! Pure DC No Inverter Hotplate 12volt offgrid</video:title>
<video:description>Cooking with NO Inverter! I believe an affordable 12 volt cooktop should be available to everyone. Check out my pure 12 volt DC powered cooktop PROTOTYPE. A cheap 12 Volt portable cooktop (or hotplate) should exist on store shelves. I often cannot find good 12 volt cooking appliances, which motivates me to build them here in the solar workshop. This hot plate is currently just a prototype and has many drawbacks, but this video proves the idea works and it can be done. The project was more difficult than expected, I encountered several technical and safety challenges while building. Not surprisingly I found many off the shelf cooktops impossible to crack into, and it was hard to know which ones were best to use as a foundation for this project. The most surprising challenge was the fireproof material found inside common cooktops. It is very dusty and looks exactly like an Asbestos based substance. Even with breathing protection I was concerned. Because of this I had to stop working on the project as of February 2024, and send samples of the material to a laboratory for testing. If the substance found inside is Asbestos, I guess I will have to rethink the plan... Second challenge, the temperatures inside the cooktop / hotplate were exceedingly higher than I expected, burning many common high temperature insulation materials - literally to a crisp. Even metal materials I often use with heating elements were affected negatively and were not reliable. During early testing, the prototype started to burn internally and emit poisonous smoke. Eventually I had to rebuild the whole thing again, at which time it seemed to work well enough for a test. So I hooked the cooktop up to my 12 volt LiFePo4 batteries and put on a pot of noodles. On February 29th, the cooktop successfully boiled and cooked a pot of noodles, straight off of a small 12 volt battery - with NO inverter! Thats when I recorded this video. I hope to finish the project asap. If there is enough demand, I may create a how-to-build video. But it needs to be a sa</video:description>

<video:title>Ultra efficient solar electric cooker! 20 Watt Solar Panel can cook an egg with diode chain solar</video:title>
<video:description>With only 10-15 watts of solar power, this prototype mini solar electric cooker can cook an egg, boil water or cook food. The power source is just a 20-watt 12 volts solar panel. The cooker uses a solid state heating element to convert direct DC solar power to heat. Because a diode chain can act similar to an MPPT circuit, it extracts more heat from the solar panel under a variety of changing solar conditions. Its possible this tiny solar cooker broke a world record, as it reached near boiling temperature at just 3.0 to 5.8 watts of power. Further testing will be undertaken to see what the limits are. I made this prototype to demonstrate what a diode chain or diode string can do with a small solar panel to cook food. Combining an insulated container with a diode chain can make an effective and efficient solar electric cooker. Larger sized portable cooker in development - hope to show that one soon. The potential applications include camping, hiking, austere situations, survival, remote sites and rural areas where times are tough and cooking fuel is hard to get. ===========Related videos and material========== Micro solar PV2L oven cooking food from 100w panel https://youtu.be/p3NOilVYK44 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ryobi 18v battery mini oven baking bread https://youtu.be/RQKIfdO-KIY ---------------------------------------------------------------------- My solar powered diode chains research playlist https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8a6nRTNyF9Or1aNBeJ0G1FvAmCVrX7wW ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Boiling an egg with a 100w solar panel https://youtu.be/-QthPOTDLSY ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Diode chains technical research part 1 https://youtu.be/6D0aUmkUQSQ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Diode chains explanation part 2 https://youtu.be/42XIbHA9Dv0 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PV-to-load solar electric c</video:description>

<video:title>Tiny Off Grid Cooking Dr. Prepare 20AH LiFePo4 Test and Review! What can a small off grid system do?</video:title>
<video:description>Cooking off-grid with a small system and standard kitchen appliances can seem out of reach due to the high power draw required. Many people do not have large batteries and inverters to do the task. What is a bare minimum setup for a solar powered emergency cooking kitchen? This is a LiFePo4 battery test and review. A battery company called Dr. Prepare provided 2 of their 12-volt 20 amp-hour (LiFePo4 / Lithium Iron Phosphate) lithium ion batteries for this video. I did not think 2 small batteries would be able to do much cooking at all. My thought was to start with the smallest AC 120v cooktop I owned. If the 20ah batteries could run that cooktop, I figured there was a chance of the setup being useful. I chose my standard 12v 1000w pure sine wave inverter for this test. To charge the batteries, I used a 100 watt solar panel and a 20 amp MPPT charge controller on hand. This equipment was cobbled together in a great hurry - so emergency conditions. But in general emergency preparedness its important to know your equipment and what its limitations are beforehand. In this case the cooking test exceeded the power rating of the 2x 20ah batteries by 18% but was succesful. Can a small off grid setup be used to cook food in an emergency? If so, how small? I have a lot of experience trying to cook off of small solar power setups. But I never tried a compact setup setup exactly like this. The small cooktop I have is a known power hog and seemed unreasonable for such small batteries. However with lithium ion batteries, its possible to output larger amounts of current in a burst without risking them too much. The number one concern is cell heating. Not surprisingly these batteries did get a bit warm, but nothing disastrous. Add to that fact the cooktop was cycling on and off, therefore allowing brief periods of cooldown. Lots of folks dont have anything like this setup at home for emergencies. A couple hundred bucks for batteries, an inverter and a solar panel can save the day and set them free from cooking fuel constraints. O</video:description>

<video:title>Solar Electric Heating Semiconductors Explained! Efficient Simple Powerful Diode chains solarheat</video:title>
<video:description>Diode strings are a very efficient and much misunderstood DIY way to get the most electric heat possible out of a PV solar panel array in a variety of solar conditions - far superior to bare resistance (Ohmic) heater elements. In this video I will explain how the technology works, and demonstrate it in operation on the workbench in my solar workshop. This is part 2 in a series about Solar Electric Heating with Solid State semiconductor heating elements. Solid State Solar Electric Heating (DIY video series) Boiling an Egg with a 20 watt solar panel and diodes: https://youtu.be/CRhkZp6ECHk Part 1: https://youtu.be/6D0aUmkUQSQ Part 2: https://youtu.be/CVH2Cv84a94 (This video) Solar Hot Water - Early Tests: https://youtu.be/Xt7dKT8LIN0 Its hard to believe, but simple diode strings (or a diode chain), which are semiconductor junctions and some of the most basic electronic components available, can actually hold the approximate Voltage of Maximum Power (Vmp) of a solar panel array nearly all day. They act almost like an MPPT DC-DC converter circuit. And they can do this without any supporting electronics. They are a practical heating element for solar electric heating and PV-to-Load applications. But there are challenges due to the current package designs available off the shelf. Diode voltage is a logarithmic function of current passing across or you could say the current increases exponentially with voltage. This happens to match very well with a solar panel when trying to extract all the electrical power as only heat. The end result is the interesting electrical behavior of diode strings as described in this video. PV-to-load is the concept of attaching useful loads directly to PV solar panel arrays, bypassing the traditional battery, inverter and charge controller setup. Operating heating loads directly off of solar panels makes sense as it saves wear and tear on expensive discrete solar power components and equipment. See videos below for more information about this concept. ---------------------------------------</video:description>

<video:title>Solar Hot Water: Boiling Diodes test! Solar electric cooking research solarheat solarwaterheater</video:title>
<video:description>Solid state solar-electric heating elements are potentially very useful for solar electric cooking, solar hot water and solar heating. (https://youtu.be/6D0aUmkUQSQ) They can cook food, heat water and produce space heat directly off of solar panels. The main benefit is they can extract more heat from the same solar panels versus resistance heating elements (this will be explained in part 2 of the video series). Here are a few clips from my solar workshop where I am investigating the potential of solid state heating elements for solar cooking and heating applications. This video is part of a series investigating Solar Electric Heating with Solid State semiconductor heating elements. Diode strings are a very efficient way to get the most electric heat possible out of a PV solar panel array, and I became very interested in applying this technology. Part 1 of series - first heating element tests: https://youtu.be/6D0aUmkUQSQ This video (solar hot water test) Part 2 explaining how solar powered solid state heating elements work: https://youtu.be/42XIbHA9Dv0 Its hard to believe, but simple diode strings (diode chains), which are semiconductor junctions and some of the most basic electronic components available, can actually hold the Voltage of Maximum Power (Vmp) of a solar panel array nearly all day. <video:title>Solar Heating - Solid State Heating Elements - demonstration on the workbench workshop solarheat</video:title>
<video:description>Solar Heating with Solid State heating elements is a relatively uncommon technique. In this video I will test the idea on the workbench in my solar workshop. Simple diodes, which are semiconductor junctions and some of the most basic electronic components available, can in theory function as a practical heating element for solar electric heating and PV-to-Load applications. Semiconductor diodes can be used to create DIY solar electric heating elements utilizing direct solar electric power to generate heat for a variety of purposes. <video:title>Solar Electric Space Heater Easy DIY! Parabolic 55V DC direct power by solar panel array solarheat</video:title>
<video:description>A common parabolic infrared space heater can be easily converted to 55 volt direct solar PV-DC operation (PV to Load / PV2L) directly consuming DC electrical power from a solar panel array. Anyone with basic electrical, safety protocols and solar knowledge can convert this heater to DC. PV2L heating is a simple and robust way to consume excess solar power to heat ones home. But converting AC space heaters to DC can be tedious and difficult. Usually a rewind of the heating element would be required for efficient operation. For example, I often rewind Quartz Infrared heating elements in my heaters to match the low voltage of my solar panels. But the heater shown in this video requires no heating element rewind at all - in fact the element is sealed and cannot be modified. Many DIY solar power enthusiasts have solar panels sitting in the sun underutilized. In fact they are just sitting there aging, when they could do something useful. After the batteries are full, why not simply burn excess solar power in a convenient and attractive form? That would be a DC space heater. Unfortunately these heaters are not currently on store shelves, but with care and attention, its possible to convert and operate your own DIY DC space heater to help heat a home or workshop. The heater shown in this video is one of the cheapest on the market, yet the easiest and most friendly to convert to DC. Please note that you should not attempt a project like this without basic electrical and solar power knowledge, plus understanding of the risks involved. A heater that has been modified loses its UL and safety rating. If a person is responsible and technical enough to understand what he is doing, then these heaters should be safe to use to heat a space with proper care and supervision. Finally an easier way to enter the world of PV to Load space heaters - you just need some basic components for the heater: 1. Crimp connectors 2. PV rated wire 3. Solar Photovoltaic DC rated circuit breaker 4. A couple of DC-rated tip over / tilt switches 5. An </video:description>

<video:title>My 12V / 18V portable oven DIY project! Camping hiking remote job sites off grid cooking! shorts</video:title>
<video:description>This portable electric field oven is powered by a Ryobi 18v battery, 12V solar battery bank or even direct PV with a 100 watt solar panel! Here is a quick test of my mini oven prototype. I built this DIY project to test the concept of simple battery or solar cooking in the field anywhere. This is a portable battery powered oven or solar electric - whichever is needed. While large solar battery systems can be expensive, commodity 18V power tool batteries are widely available and easy to charge with a small solar panel. A portable oven like this would be great for remote job sites, camping / RV, off grid sites, rural areas to name a few. Since there is a valid use case for this kind of technology, my hope this that manufacturers will pick up on the idea and create simple, affordable and refined products that people can use to cook food in sparse conditions with minimal power requirements. For me, high tech survival and preparedness is about making technology work in simple yet effective ways. Is it possible to bake bread using an 18V Power Tool Battery? Recently, I set out to answer this question. In the back yard I set up a table and connected my mini solar electric PV2L oven to a Ryobi 18V power tool battery with alligator clips. After a few adjustments and a short wait, the oven was able to reach over 300 degrees Fahrenheit. My oven is basically the same design I showed in the last video, in which it ran off a single 100 watt solar panel and nothing else. I used it to cook hot dogs and chicken. A link to that video is in the description. On to the bread. I am absolutely not a cook, but a family member gave me some leftover bread dough. So I used it to make a couple of test samples... err small bread rolls, and put them in a tin foil pan for the test. Of course more food can fit inside, but I only wanted to prove the concept. If there is one thing I can do, its play with food and burn it in a prototype device. This is real science. If youve been following my channel, you know I like to operate devices, such as co</video:description>

<video:description>ENDURANCE TEST and review of the Pecron E600 LFP solar generator / portable power station. I was sent this unit for evaluation and I dont get any commissions for sales. In this video I put the E600 LFP through a variety of tests to see how it performs in real world circumstances. The endurance test consists of several days of running a 5000btu window air conditioner while charging from 200-300 watts of solar power all day. This type of test, while slightly unreasonable for a system of this size, is designed to expose any flaws in system cooling and overall performance. I also tested the DC outputs and USB charging, and provide general commentary and feedback throughout the test. Minimum time spent evaluating this unit was 7 days. A solar generator is a great way for people who are new to solar power to get started without much effort. <video:description>Build a portable 12 volt toaster oven for about 25 dollars! This solar and 12 volts powered oven has been in development for a long time, and now I am sharing it with the world. In short, we can take an existing 120V AC powered toaster oven and convert it to a portable 12/24V operation mode. This oven is so efficient, needing only about 144 watts of clean mobile DC power to bake bread, roast meat and vegetables or just warm up your lunch on the job site. Solar Cooking is renewable, clean and an effective boost to preparedness and readiness capabilities. 12 volt toaster ovens should be very cheap and readily available - the world needs them. Ive been working on a mini 12v DIY volt toaster oven prototype project for over a year in the solar workshop. If only there were plenty of affordable kitchen grade 12 volt cooking appliances on the market, but as of the time of this video, there just isnt - and this has been the case for many years. This video is for DIY solar enthusiasts who like to work with their hands, do research and learn new skills. Its more than enough for you to start your own oven project. I do hope manufacturers wake up build appliances like this oven and other prototypes I have developed. Why arent they already on store shelves? I sure hope they will be someday!</video:description>

<video:title>LiFePo4 200ah Air Conditioning Capacity Test - Redodo battery review Off Grid Solar AC</video:title>
<video:description>How long can a 12v 200ah LiFePo4 run my air conditioner off grid? In this video, I test and review the Redodo 200ah LiFePo4 deep cycle off grid lithium ion battery for solar power and renewable energy applications. After charging from 4 100 watt solar panels outside, the AC will run non-stop for the duration of the test. Of course the test was designed to deliberately drain the battery, with careful use, the air conditioner could run much longer. One of the most important aspects of any drop-in LiFePo4 12v battery is whether its capacity meets advertised specifications. Some do not. Without a full discharge test, its impossible to verify manufacturer amp hour capacity claims. I designed a test to nearly completely discharge this 200ah LiFePo4 battery while operating a realistic and real-world load (5000btu air conditioner) without any assistance from solar charging. This simulated cloud conditions or overnight use under heavy loads. Over voltage protection is also very important. While testing the Redodo battery I deliberately allowed the terminal voltage to rise too high while charging. This confirmed the OVP works as advertised, disconnecting the battery terminals internally to prevent further harm to the battery. Although I hate doing over-voltage charging tests, there is no other way to confirm the capability exists. If you are interested in the Redodo 200ah LiFePo4 battery, here is a link and discount code. <video:description>Testing an emergency charging system for my Ryobi 48v LiFePo4 powered riding lawn mower. A This 12v 200ah battery should have enough power to charge my mower, but its voltage doesnt match its 48v battery pack. With about 2.5kWh of capacity, the Power Queen 200ah LiFePo4 should be able to do the job. <video:title>UPS with LiFePo4 Lithium Ion Batteries! GoldenMate Test & Review - 800w inverter power backup</video:title>
<video:description>In this video, I test and review the Goldenmate Lithium Ion Uninterruptible Power Supply. A UPS with LiFePo4 batteries should last much longer than their lead-acid powered counterparts. Most UPSs today require replacing lead acid batteries several times during their service. But Lithium Iron Phosphate offers better performance, lighter weight and the batteries should not require replacing for a very long time. I put this UPS through various tests to see if it was fast enough to provide backup power to a computer and other equipment. UPSs require fast switching time, otherwise they dont work. I will prove here whether this UPS is good enough for the task. Thanks for watching! -Dave ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note I dont receive commissions for sales of this UPS. <video:title>XZNY Ultra Mini LiFePo4 12V 100ah Test & Review - Off Grid Workshop Power offgrid solar review</video:title>
<video:description>XZNY provides small form factor 12 and 24v LiFePo4 batteries - they sent 2 samples of their 100 amp hour versions for review and testing. I put them through a deep cycle discharge test running an air conditioner for 5 hours straight with no assistance from a charge controller. I also did further long term testing in the off grid solar power system which provides electrical power for my solar workshop. In the video I also compared the physical size to other competitive batteries on the market to see if they are physically smaller. The XZNY batteries will help power my workshop long-term and may appear in future videos. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note I dont accept commissions for product reviews.
